Aside from offering outstanding performance and consistency with long-term, stable performance, tcxos have become the choice timing device for applications requiring unparalleled performance. Temperature controlled crystal oscillators can meet the standard for applications requiring less than 1PPM performance along with exceptionally low jitter (cycle to cycle) and TDEV or MTIE performance. These oscillators can provide an extremely stable output over temperature and is a less expensive alternative to the Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO).

How they function
Using a signal from a temperature sensor, these components generate a correct voltage that is applied to a voltage-variable reactance or varactor. A frequency is then produced by the varactor that is equal and opposite to the change in frequency produced by the temperature. These oscillators are not recommended when high stability over wide temperature ranges are required.
TCXOs are available in stabilities from ±0.5ppm to ±10ppm with electrical and/or mechanical tuning.
